LJ Strikeout '07: Support Freedom of Expression!

Ok...so sorry if you've all seen this all over your friends list, but compiling two different "action plans". I'm sorry, but i'm screening comments and logging IPs. >>; you will have to wait till your comment shows up.

[livejournal.com profile] roaring's compiled a listing of some of the facts, which link to more facts, etc., of what's going on, mostly in relation to the fandom people getting hit by this.
Click the banner above to see that.

this was taken from [livejournal.com profile] rosesatmidnight for the same program on a more personal standpoiont, though I edited it for my own words at the end. For the original go take action!

Dear LJ:

I was quite appalled to hear about your mass-deletion of communities and journals with what you deemed as 'triggering' interests. Some of us have survived Rape. Some of us have survived abuse. And some of us wish to speak up and help others. How can we do that if you're taking away what we use to help those in need?

Have you even researched this "Warriors For Innocence"? Now what about the countless others who will not benefit from this deletion? What about the countless molesters who will now be driven further underground?

What about the countless members who have survived abuse, who have survived rape, and are now, finally, proud to stand up and say that they have... only for LJ to tell them that they can't?

Now what will we do? Now what source will we have to share our stories and our knowledge with others, now that your once-valuable source has been so ruthlessly and thoughtlessly taken away?

You were once one of the voices that helped make us strong as a united front.

And now your silence in the fight deafens me. Your silence speaks volumes, as much now as it will ever speak. Your silence is like a slap in the face to those of us who have survived the rape, survived the abuse, and are now, or will soon, learn to stand again, learn to live again, learn to function again.

As the friend of several people who have survived abuse and rape, I, personally, hope that you never experience it. And if that does happen, I hope that this very same silence never crosses your path.

Respectfully,
ladybrighid3333

Comment(optional):I never even mentioned to my closet friends that I had a very minor molestion case a very long time ago by my "best friend's" oldest brother. I never even mentioned it to my mom and I'm 26 yrs old today and when it happened I was around 7 yrs old. Something about this nonsence just yelled out at me to finally say something about it. LJ is making no sence to me all of a sudden. I'm actually thinking of moving out of here and finding somewhere else that won't discriminate journals like that. And now all of the guilty ones will be hidden once again making people a target again. Thanks a lot LJ.

Comment(optional): I see...it's freedom of speech for everyone so long as it's the religious right? I find it odd that numerous complaints have been made to LJ in the past about ILLEGAL things such as people bragging of rape, drug use, talking about murder, and zilch is done but private journals are being deleted at the whim of some vigilante group? Shame, LJ, shame...

Comment(optional): I know you're doing this because you think it will protect people from such things as rape and abuse. But I must tell you the only thing you're doing is scaring your public. People fear for their art, their writing, and their freedom of speach. LJ is a place where people can meet others like them and create new things with them. Please don't take that away!

Comment(optional): I am seriously considering closing my journal and ask for a refund for those months I've already paid for (if I can). This plus LJ's policy regarding anti-semetic sentiments makes this place unsafe (I refer to a small incident where a Jewish community was harassed by one user who spread anti-semetic comments all over the community. LJ refused to ban the user, and only suggested that the community be made friends only. Grrrr.) in all senses of the word.

I am both a childhood sexual abuse survivor and I LOVE lolikon and shotakon fiction.

Comment(optional): I honestly don't know what to say. This definitely isn't the livejournal that I've visited off and on for the past seven years. That livejournal was a place where people could freely express themselves without the fear of having their journal/communities deleted. I agree with everyone that's saying that you're punishing the wrong people. I hope you realize that and restore the journals/communities that should have never been deleted in the first place.

Comment(optional): I think that Live Journals is approaching this in the worst of ways. Deleting accounts and communities based on trigger words is unacceptable. Everyone should be able to voice there opinions, what ever happened to freedom of speech. I'm not condoning pedophilia or anything of the sort. But many fandom journals and communities are being punished for reasons that aren't apparent. This is fiction for heavens sake, writing communities. It's unfair that we must fear our work will be deleted merely because of our interests! It's seems like live journal admin have gone trigger happy as well, deleting support groups. All that this massive deleting has caused is for the real criminals to hide. This must stop now, or many lj users will be lost.

Comment(optional): I find this action to be outrageous. While it may have started as a noble endevour, the system has crumbled into little more than a witch-hunt. While I in no way upon this earth condone pedophilia, the mass deletions of journals simply because they have a trigger word that rings the "BAD" bell is wholly inappropriate. Take a look closer...look underneath the underneath. A turn of the phrase may not mean what you are hearing.
And onto the subject of fanfiction. If I am correct, isnt there this pesky little thing in the Bill of Rights that talks about free speech. That may be my imagination....but who knows...Maybe it is REAL. LJ, take a look at the context that many of these works of fandom are written in. TAke a look at the works that they are written for and the culture that these are based on. ARe all books that are published and found in Libraries free of your 'trigger words'? No they are not...Do you wish to burn them too?...How about we condemn the writers that wrote those great works of art?...Shall we burn them at the stake?..While this is an extreme example, what you are doing now is just a modern day witch hunt that ammature writers that dabble in fanfiction are facing.
Your indiscriminate actions are driving the real criminals underground LJ. Take care with your actions please and redo the system and add some discrimination.

Comment(optional): I'm shocked and sickened by the action that LJ is taking. Just because you you talk about a certain topic does NOT mean you condone it and it does NOT mean you're going to trigger any of the said activities. Many of the communities my friends are in have been banned. Why? Not because they participate in any illegal activities but mearly because they like the sort of FICTION that is written. They are law-abiding citizens who have done NOTHING wrong. This is just ridiculous.

Comment(optional): I'm mostly disappointed that no one who works for LJ/Six Apart has bothered addressing this; it's not right that we should hear about something as huge as this from an alternate source. I would elaborate more, but I think the original post says what I'm thinking quite nicely.

Comment(optional): What you did was sloppy and irresponsible- and not only that. As it turns out, you were given a very specific list of pedophile communities by a legitimate anti-pedophile group, and yet at that time you stated that you would do nothing. And yet, when this group with absolutely no credentials simply threatens to contact your advertisers, you back down? If it's so easy to get you to do what someone else wants, I'm afraid that I can no longer feel comfortable posting at LiveJournal.com.

Comment(optional): This is absolutely ridiculous. Mass deletion of accounts that contain certain words all because of an extremist right-wing group? Where is your loyalty to your users? Your users are what makes LJ, not Six Apart. This is how you repay them? By deleting their accounts?? This is fiction. None of it is real, I highly doubt that any of are in support of rape and pedophilia in real life.

Comment(optional): Much fun as it isn't to moderate my own mind in my own damned journal.... As a fanfiction author whos written graphic, violent rape into a story and been PRAISED for it by survivors of abuse for the way it was expressed, I am offended and disgusted at what's going on. Freedom of speech is all well and good, as long as what your saying is 'mainstream' and 'safe', right? I've loved my journal. But I don't think I'll be renewing my subscription.
