LJ Strikeout '07: Support Freedom of Expression!

Ok...so sorry if you've all seen this all over your friends list, but compiling two different "action plans". I'm sorry, but i'm screening comments and logging IPs. >>; you will have to wait till your comment shows up.

[livejournal.com profile] roaring's compiled a listing of some of the facts, which link to more facts, etc., of what's going on, mostly in relation to the fandom people getting hit by this.
Click the banner above to see that.

this was taken from [livejournal.com profile] rosesatmidnight for the same program on a more personal standpoiont, though I edited it for my own words at the end. For the original go take action!

Dear LJ:

I was quite appalled to hear about your mass-deletion of communities and journals with what you deemed as 'triggering' interests. Some of us have survived Rape. Some of us have survived abuse. And some of us wish to speak up and help others. How can we do that if you're taking away what we use to help those in need?

Have you even researched this "Warriors For Innocence"? Now what about the countless others who will not benefit from this deletion? What about the countless molesters who will now be driven further underground?

What about the countless members who have survived abuse, who have survived rape, and are now, finally, proud to stand up and say that they have... only for LJ to tell them that they can't?

Now what will we do? Now what source will we have to share our stories and our knowledge with others, now that your once-valuable source has been so ruthlessly and thoughtlessly taken away?

You were once one of the voices that helped make us strong as a united front.

And now your silence in the fight deafens me. Your silence speaks volumes, as much now as it will ever speak. Your silence is like a slap in the face to those of us who have survived the rape, survived the abuse, and are now, or will soon, learn to stand again, learn to live again, learn to function again.

As the friend of several people who have survived abuse and rape, I, personally, hope that you never experience it. And if that does happen, I hope that this very same silence never crosses your path.

Respectfully,
ladybrighid3333

Comment(optional):I sent in the letter, but I wonder if anyone will actually look at it....so I'm doing this too in the hopes that it stands a better chance of being seen. I am an abuse survivor...while I haven't ever added that as an interest, I am appalled that these journals and communities related to survivors are being suspended. Also as a survivor, I am personally made ill by the young-with-adult slash pairings, but that doesn't mean I think people shouldn't have the right to write about them. It's FICTION, after all, with FICTIONAL characters. If LJ can't crack down on real threats, what are they thinking coming down on fictional writings?

Comment(optional): Nice going, LJ - a whole lot of innocent people harmed, a whole lot of guilty people given the heads-up so that they can get off scot-free and a whole lot of pissed off users who are now thinking that maybe, just maybe, that GJ account they made a year ago should get some use. Yeah, I can see how this is a good idea, except for the fact that, you know - I can't.

Comment(optional): What the hell happened to freedom of speech? Or at least, giving certain comms a heads-up? You say that you're doing what was brought to your attention to intentionally suspend comms and such and that you feel sorry for doing so, but shit is unbelievable. You could have at least given a person a warning. The way that you're going about this 'purging' is tyrranical and you're going to wind up hurting/angering a lot of people.

Comment(optional):
The amount of irresponsibility that's running rampant here is astounding.  Not to mention the fact that, two days later, no public post has been made (STILL) by those responsible for these ridiculous, sweeping generalizations and censorship events taking place.  This has already gotten hugely out of hand, and will only get worse if those in charge don't step up to the plate and fix this, right quick.

I'm a paying member of this site, and I post here because I enjoy the community.  However, if this issue isn't resolved in a manner which gives the respect deserved to the users of this site, I will have no issue with deleting my journal, never paying a cent to LJ/6A again, and taking my business and content elsewhere.

Comment(optional): I hope this is resolved soon. How can you possibly delete based on complain? Is it not possible the one who lodged the complaint had a vandetta or agenda against people who did not think the same as they? Why was it so difficult for me to report someone raping their little sister for real and writing about it, but then 500 journals get deleted based on interest?

Comment(optional): Freedom of speech is so important in our society. Silencing fandom will not help anything. Silencing people that have survived rape and abuse will not help at all. The thought is a very good one, the execution is what failed.

Comment(optional): I was drawn to LJ because of its large fandom base. I tell my friends who have MySpace that LJ is better, because of its fandom base. Now, I get to tell them LJ is better because it censors its users because some right wing nut job appealed to the advertisers. Fan-fucking-tastic job on that one, LiveJournal!

I pay for my account so I can sit around after a miserable day at work reading dirty, dirty slash fiction to make myself feel better. And LJ wants to take that away from me? SHAME. Comment(optional): I am utterly disgusted that SixApart didn't have time for the 30 seconds it would have taken to realize that WFI were a bunch of sleaze, or the 30 minutes that it would've taken to verify the journals they deleted were the right ones, or to make any kind of statement attempting to justify their suppression of free speech. LiveJournal need only look at the FanLib fiasco to figure out what is going to happen here. Fandom will not lie down, and LiveJournal is going to lose.

Comment(optional): i don't know if this is a hoax but it still has me frightened. first i thought, should i take out stuff like gay & queer from my interests? it's sexual sort of in nature. then it occurred to me that the title of my journal itself might put it in jeopardy? a funny comment between one character and another in a film.

if you want to delete based on content that is one thing, but just to go on listed interests? that seems extreme. i have been on lj since 2003 and am a paid user, but if i feel like i have to be censored - or that lj promotes censorship - then i will leave for good. it would be difficult for me as lj is a huge part of my life but i can't willingly be a part of something that promotes censorship.

[identity profile] hellgirldeity.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
I actually added gay rights and gay marriage to my interests after reading the Cnet article. I just wish I had done it sooner. If LJ wants to delete my journal for it, let them. I may just be one user, but I'm a paid user. On a financial standpoint, they are only hurting themselves.
