50bookchallenge started July 18 2008
includes e-books and manga1. The White Darkness by Geraldine McCaughrean
finished July 25 2008
Genre: Young Adult Fiction
Why I chose it: picked this up because I saw it as a recommended reading in a random journal I was browsing one day over on InsaneJournal.
Summary: Fourteen-year-old Symone is obsessed with Antartica and her secret confidant is the Captain Oates of Scott's doomed expedition to the South Pole. Her the brave romantic figure of Captain Oates from Scott' doomed expedition to the South Pole. Her vacation in Antartica gets dangerous when her uncle begins obsessing over finding Symme's Hole, an opening that may lead to the center of the earth.
Rating: A
Thoughts: This was really good for an adventure fantasy. It kept me interested and I like how this author portrays the relationship the main character has with Captain Oates as well as the other adventurers.
2. Little Darling by Matsuri Kouzuki
finished Aug 3 2008
Genre: Adult, Japanese Yaoi Novel
Why I chose it: My boyfriend handed this to me a few days ago because he hated the purple prose and he knows I'll read anything once.
Summary: A black-haired angel and a sandy-haired demon fall in love. The angel happens to turn into a kid during the day and a man in hot water at night. The demon happens to be a hermaphrodite aiming to become a man. This story trails the two of them as they are living together then married.
Rating: B
Thoughts: As far as most yaoi novels go, it was traditional in the flippy hair and ostentatiously flirty sense with all too much purple prose. The unique parts being mainly that heaven is about as indulgent as hell and earth, and the angel happens to play the seme.
3. Maggie: A Girl of the Streets and Other Short Fiction by Stephen Crane
Why I chose it: July Theme - had to read this for US History 2 in high school and found it hard to follow.
