LJ Strikeout '07: Support Freedom of Expression!

Ok...so sorry if you've all seen this all over your friends list, but compiling two different "action plans". I'm sorry, but i'm screening comments and logging IPs. >>; you will have to wait till your comment shows up.

[livejournal.com profile] roaring's compiled a listing of some of the facts, which link to more facts, etc., of what's going on, mostly in relation to the fandom people getting hit by this.
Click the banner above to see that.

this was taken from [livejournal.com profile] rosesatmidnight for the same program on a more personal standpoiont, though I edited it for my own words at the end. For the original go take action!

Dear LJ:

I was quite appalled to hear about your mass-deletion of communities and journals with what you deemed as 'triggering' interests. Some of us have survived Rape. Some of us have survived abuse. And some of us wish to speak up and help others. How can we do that if you're taking away what we use to help those in need?

Have you even researched this "Warriors For Innocence"? Now what about the countless others who will not benefit from this deletion? What about the countless molesters who will now be driven further underground?

What about the countless members who have survived abuse, who have survived rape, and are now, finally, proud to stand up and say that they have... only for LJ to tell them that they can't?

Now what will we do? Now what source will we have to share our stories and our knowledge with others, now that your once-valuable source has been so ruthlessly and thoughtlessly taken away?

You were once one of the voices that helped make us strong as a united front.

And now your silence in the fight deafens me. Your silence speaks volumes, as much now as it will ever speak. Your silence is like a slap in the face to those of us who have survived the rape, survived the abuse, and are now, or will soon, learn to stand again, learn to live again, learn to function again.

As the friend of several people who have survived abuse and rape, I, personally, hope that you never experience it. And if that does happen, I hope that this very same silence never crosses your path.

Respectfully,
ladybrighid3333

Comment(optional): First, if I were them I'd consider MySpace a much bigger threat than LiveJournal. I don't know exact numbers for how many children were solicited over LJ, but you never hear about a child getting abducted, molested, etc. by someone here; it's virtually always MySpace. And I'm surprised LiveJournal would just keel over and let these so-called "Warriors for Innocence" do this.

On the other hand - and don't get me wrong, I don't support this at all - I hardly appreciate the outraged LiveJournal users that are calling this an Innocence Jihad. It's not cute, it's not funny, and it's extremely offensive. Knock it off.

Comment(optional): Indiscriminate deleting of journals is awful. I myself have years of rants and memories saved and LJ is easily my favorite spot on the internet. That people are now having to worry about Freedom of Speach in their online journal is ghastly. In no way do I condone pedophilia, but that's not the issue here. This is a free community that thrives on it's openness, and the hundres of people rushing to edit their interests lest they be banned for being a fan of Death Note have now lost trust in that. Beyond that, it is my experience that when the LJ community comes in contact with something that isn't right, they take action to fix it. If you don't believe that, maybe you should take another look at this post, and the flood of comments that follow.

Again, I have no problems with actual illegial content being removed, but this is rediculous.

Comment(optional): This is outrageous. The content of these journals is our intellectual property, no matter what we post about. Yes, the internet is a dangerous place. But LJ? Tighten security measures if you must. Ask users with "suspicious content" to make their journals private. But it is morally reprehensible to delete them completely. How would you like it if I came and raided your house and burned your belongings, LJ? Just because some passing children could look in the window? Yeah, didn't think so.

Comment(optional): The silence by LiveJournal is similar to that of the United States in WWII while thousands of innocent people were sent to death camps. The United States didn't step up until they were hit and so it seems to be the same with LJ. Silence for those who are innocent. Silence for those who are survivors. Silence for those whose lives can/are/might be bettered by people simply listening to them.

In short, it seems that you LiveJournal, have made it unclean to be a survivor. That sickens me. As a worker in the emergency medical services, I have found that letting people speak and being an ear to listen is sometimes the best therapy around. Why have you, LiveJournal, seemingly allowed yourself to be told to take a step backwards? As a global community, we should be lifting up survivors of everything from natural disasters to cancer to rape.

Silence is like losing the ability to breathe; eventually it kills you.

Comment(optional): As a victim of child molestation, I find the recent actions of WFI and LJ just sickening and horrible. A child is more likely to be molested by someone at home, like I was, rather than someone on the internet that likes fan fiction. WFI's idea is wonderful, but their execution is going to keep LE from being able to find the real pedophiles.

Comment(optional):This whole thing is and unbelivable invasion of peoples privacy, and you've only given anyone who is a real threat a heads up by deleting Comm's and users that are in no way related to what you are looking for. A large part of the site is fandom based so why are you trying to ditch the "questional" ones? Your complete and utter disregard for the people of whom you've hurt fucking sickens me.

Now some lunatic group whining about 'must protect' and you just cave in? My gods, where is your spine? Who is paying for your service? Whiny groups, or your subscribers?

Grow a backbone, and stop placating the LOUD lunatic minority, and do the right thing for a change.

LiveJournal has a true sense of community. From art to zombies, if you can think of it, there's a community about it. If not, you can create your own!
You know what I have the sense of? Betrayal.

Comment(optional): while i understand the idea behind LJ's actions, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. plenty of other websites include statements in their TOS that the site itself is not responsible for content posted by the site's users. at the very least LJ could do a quick read-through of the most recent posts in a journal/comm to differentiate between "i like to rape little girls" and "i was raped as a little girl."

Comment(optional): I'm not even a part of any fandoms anymore (despite my username), and I find this appalling. I thought LJ was all about protecting free speech, but as soon as they get a little pressure from an outside organization which knows nothing about how LJ functions, they go and delete everything that might piss them off. Pushovers.
