LJ Strikeout '07: Support Freedom of Expression!

Ok...so sorry if you've all seen this all over your friends list, but compiling two different "action plans". I'm sorry, but i'm screening comments and logging IPs. >>; you will have to wait till your comment shows up.

[livejournal.com profile] roaring's compiled a listing of some of the facts, which link to more facts, etc., of what's going on, mostly in relation to the fandom people getting hit by this.
Click the banner above to see that.

this was taken from [livejournal.com profile] rosesatmidnight for the same program on a more personal standpoiont, though I edited it for my own words at the end. For the original go take action!

Dear LJ:

I was quite appalled to hear about your mass-deletion of communities and journals with what you deemed as 'triggering' interests. Some of us have survived Rape. Some of us have survived abuse. And some of us wish to speak up and help others. How can we do that if you're taking away what we use to help those in need?

Have you even researched this "Warriors For Innocence"? Now what about the countless others who will not benefit from this deletion? What about the countless molesters who will now be driven further underground?

What about the countless members who have survived abuse, who have survived rape, and are now, finally, proud to stand up and say that they have... only for LJ to tell them that they can't?

Now what will we do? Now what source will we have to share our stories and our knowledge with others, now that your once-valuable source has been so ruthlessly and thoughtlessly taken away?

You were once one of the voices that helped make us strong as a united front.

And now your silence in the fight deafens me. Your silence speaks volumes, as much now as it will ever speak. Your silence is like a slap in the face to those of us who have survived the rape, survived the abuse, and are now, or will soon, learn to stand again, learn to live again, learn to function again.

As the friend of several people who have survived abuse and rape, I, personally, hope that you never experience it. And if that does happen, I hope that this very same silence never crosses your path.

Respectfully,
ladybrighid3333

Comment(optional): I already indepenantly sent you some "feedback" on this matter, Livejournal (or, should I say, SixApart), so you know where I stand. I stand on the side of freedom of expression, and I will not be changing anything about any of my journals. You are a bunch of greedy, careless people who have no right to be making money from this website. You are going against the First Amendment. If all of your victims and their supporters donated just a few dollars, we would have no trouble taking you all the way to the Supreme Court over this.

Comment(optional):It seems like our country has truly gone crazy in the past few years. Those who would poke fun at how serious we can be are being fired, those who stand up for our rights are being thrown behind bars, those who commit no crime at all are attacked and those who only want to love are looked upon as sick, yet those moral warriors who censor, hurt, or punish anyone who they see as any kind of threat, even when there is no threat present, are punished and silenced. I hope I will not have to leave L.J., but it may be time to go.

Comment(optional): By deleting journals that have done nothing to violate the terms of service, you have violated the trust and faith that every LJ user had placed in you to do the right thing in the face of special-interest groups only interested in denying others their basic rights. You will find earning that trust back to be far harder than shredding it.

Comment(optional): You've created a border through our bonds, and we'd be damn fools to let this go without a last word. I'm no more shocked than I am hurt and disappointed. This is fiction, authors write of it all the time, art is something that helps us all get stuff off our chests. What are we, the members supposed to think after this? Freedom of speech is not only a right, but a natural born right at that, and I've said all I've needed to. If you're so keen on ridding trouble, then you should be sure that you're banning the right people, because so far : no one is happy.

Fix what you've broken.

Comment(optional):
I dont think I know the whole story yet, but I doubt the "Warriors For Innocence." There are people out there who just sound like good guys, but who are really just manipulating the world to suit their needs. Too many times have I seen God's name be used to manipulate people, now the word innocence is too? Does LJ feel guilty, and that deleting mere words will undo their mistakes?

And warriors! Why are they 'warriors?' I get the impression of a violent attack when I hear that word, but violence does not suit innocence! Warriors are for battles and wars, and when has there ever been an innocent war? Blood is shed in all wars, and if 'innocent' is defined by blood, death, and conflict, then why should we strive to achieve innocence? Is there not a better, more "innocent" name for their organization?

Names and manipulations aside, this is not the correct way to send their message across! Hiding the unpleasant doesn't make it disappear, and doing so prevents you from explaining why it is bad. In the darkness, things multiply. Without knowledge, curiosity piques. These two facts guarentee that any attempts to suppress the populace will merely lead to the opposite of their original goal! If you wish to stop something, you can't do so by ignoring it, you must promote the opposite. Deletes and bans are merely ignores, as the thoughts that lead to the posts still exist, unchanged, and will manifest themselves elsewhere.

You can stop the people from speaking, but can you put a halt to their thoughts? The truth is yes; you can. Only through death of the mind can you achieve this though, and Death is hardly innocent.

Notes:
1) I'm not religious.
2) The warrioors thing may be too picky, but thats honestly the image I get.
3) Ever watched "Invisible Children"? They were ignored, and the situation got worse!
4) I'm posting my response in my journal, as I can't be bothered to search for this comment later.

Comment(optional): way to give in to right wing bullying. Worthy sentiments, but idiotically poorly thought out excecution. Just deleting someones account won't stop them. It'll just drive them further underground; Meanwhile, those who write fiction, are members of support groups or just happen to have an icon/ interest that might be offensive to a group of self righteous assholes get screwed over.

Comment(optional): So what happened to our right to free speech? Simply saying that you are interested in something does not necessarily mean you practice it; check the journals for content before going on a crusade. I have to say, I'm really disappointed in Livejournal today.

Comment(optional): I am deeply dissapointed in Livejournal for going through with this. I know hundreds of people have already said this, but the only thing deleting communities and users is doing is providing the real offenders the chance to hide even further from the spotlight. I definitely do not condone pedophilia, and I think people who commit such terrible crimes against children should be caught and punished. However, I do believe in freedom of speech. The reason I became a paid LJ user is because I thought LJ's professionalism and protection of the freedom of speech was an amazing service to the millions of people who use this site, and I wanted to help support a site that I care deeply about. But now, I'm not too sure that I did the right thing in purchasing a paid account. If this continues, I don't think I will be renewing it.

Comment(optional): To LJ: I can understand the RL pedo comms, and the RL 'cest comms. But why the fiction ones? There are worse things out there than comms regarding fictional people. I really don't want to believe that you did this for the money, but the evidence supporting that theory is large. About as large as the evidence backing the Warriors for Innocence is small.

Comment(optional): It is incredibly disheartening to know that fanatacism of others is leading to the infringement of rights of innocent writers. It is not LiveJournal's responsibility to be the parents and protect the innocent eyes of the young. Parents should monitor the browsing habits of their children, take an ACTIVE parenting role.
