LJ Strikeout '07: Support Freedom of Expression!

Ok...so sorry if you've all seen this all over your friends list, but compiling two different "action plans". I'm sorry, but i'm screening comments and logging IPs. >>; you will have to wait till your comment shows up.

[livejournal.com profile] roaring's compiled a listing of some of the facts, which link to more facts, etc., of what's going on, mostly in relation to the fandom people getting hit by this.
Click the banner above to see that.

this was taken from [livejournal.com profile] rosesatmidnight for the same program on a more personal standpoiont, though I edited it for my own words at the end. For the original go take action!

Dear LJ:

I was quite appalled to hear about your mass-deletion of communities and journals with what you deemed as 'triggering' interests. Some of us have survived Rape. Some of us have survived abuse. And some of us wish to speak up and help others. How can we do that if you're taking away what we use to help those in need?

Have you even researched this "Warriors For Innocence"? Now what about the countless others who will not benefit from this deletion? What about the countless molesters who will now be driven further underground?

What about the countless members who have survived abuse, who have survived rape, and are now, finally, proud to stand up and say that they have... only for LJ to tell them that they can't?

Now what will we do? Now what source will we have to share our stories and our knowledge with others, now that your once-valuable source has been so ruthlessly and thoughtlessly taken away?

You were once one of the voices that helped make us strong as a united front.

And now your silence in the fight deafens me. Your silence speaks volumes, as much now as it will ever speak. Your silence is like a slap in the face to those of us who have survived the rape, survived the abuse, and are now, or will soon, learn to stand again, learn to live again, learn to function again.

As the friend of several people who have survived abuse and rape, I, personally, hope that you never experience it. And if that does happen, I hope that this very same silence never crosses your path.

Respectfully,
ladybrighid3333

Comment(optional): While I do understand the legal issues you hope to... escape from with this move, I also hope you understand that deleting accounts, weather comms or private journals, will amount to nothing other than loosing LJ appeal for the people with good intentions and even worse: It might give the very people you want to purge from LJ a chance to fight back, arguing the your poor judgment on indiscriminately erasing accounts.

Comment(optional): People here are saying silence speaks louder than words, and I'm agreeing. LJ has been silent on this. All information comes from those affected by this 'strikethrough'. Lj, this is a bunch of crap. I joined nearly two years ago and it was an area, a forum for ideas, for people with similar interests to come together and get to know each other. You're taking away valuable support to others. This indiscriminate shutting down of comms and journals is hurting you in the long run. Ever heard of the power of the masses? Things happen when tick off the hands that feed you....they stop feeding you.

Comment(optional): I always thought that sites like this would be nice enough to give fair warning, or were required to inform their users when they changed the TOS to something unjust - all so they could destroy a thousand journals. Obviously not, obviously you can do whatever you want, even if it's in the most unintelligent way possible. It's a pretty sad state of affairs when this is a sign of the times in a country that guarantees a protection of freedom of speech. As such, other than for discussion of this topic alone, I will boycott the use of livejournal altogether, until such a time as LJ does 4 things:
-Completely undoes the entire deletion, not just some of the journals - ALL
-Removes the new rules that caused this to happen from their TOS
-Apologizes formally in writing to all LJ users
-Promises in writing in the TOS that they will never allow this sort of blanket ban to happen again - that from now on all banned users will have to be reported to them and personally checked by them first

Comment(optional): I definitely have to voice my objection to this nonsesne. Let the LE find the predators. I understand LJ can't allow itself to be a place that harbors criminals, but it's not up to LJ to decide who is a pedophile and who isn't (nor is it possible to sight a pedophile by their interests. seriously, what pedophile would list such incriminating evidence- especially in light of this craziness?) I ask that LJ recognize that many innocent fandom people have been victimized by this and that everyone else is freaked out. This is really sad.

Comment(optional): Besides this being utterly ridiculuous, it's insulting. We aren't criminals of any nature, just a human one. Every human has a right to freedom of thought and expression (because this is a US based site). It's not illegal because it's not real... most of this is anime and whatnot, so LJs accusations are out of the box.

Comment(optional): I am all for protecting the internet from kid stalkers and REAL pedophiles, but this is just trying to take action for action's sake without doing much good for the real problem. It's not right at all to target people who are not guilty of anything. Fiction is different than reality, stop wasting time on people looking at/drawing/writing underage kids and get to those who are doing it FOR REAL. There is a huge difference.

Comment(optional): LJ, I'm really disappointed in you. Why would you delete communities that are just about writing? Hell, half the books in the world along with TV shows and movies should be deleted then. You've overlooked this type of stuff before when LJ users have reported real pedophiles with "freedom of speech". Go after the real pedophiles and leave those who like writing and being there for others who have gone through these kinds of these alone. We're not the criminals, the real pedophiles and perverts are.

Comment(optional): I've gone through what would be considered rape, and I would never condone the actions in my life. I am a writer and sometimes these things happen in fiction, but I would never EVER think about promoting them in real life. Livejournal was a safe place to express my thoughts, my dreams, my fears, and now I have to think about what I type so I can word it without someone coming after me with a accusing finger.

I stand for protecting the freedom of expression and while yes, these warriors for innocence did shut down a few groups, they've utterly destroyed fandom communities. Journal's used for roleplay that specifically state that they are nothing more then a fictional character, gone under lock and key just because of a fanatical group of people who think they're doing the right thing.

Here's to hopping things change.

Comment(optional): I'm very disappointed at you, LJ. You could have done this the right way, you could have warned people you could have investigated a little bit before suspending communities and people the way you did. You violated your own rules.. therefore you can't be trusted, you don't know what freedom of speech is and only god knows what else is coming. Oh yeah I'm so not renewing my paid account, btw.

Comment(optional): I enjoy reading incest and consenting (!) underage, does that make me a bad person? I think not, and it's more than unfair that I now need to be scared of these activists in my own LJ. I always considered LJ a sacred and safe space for slashers and harmless freaks of any kind, but now I don't feel safe anymore, not safe in my own journal, isn't that sad?
With this we lost the last real freedom of speech.

Screw you LJ, screw you sideways. Seriously, if I could I would want my money back for this paid account. Totally isn't worth to support you guys anymore, since you CLEARLY can't support us.

A place to express yourself and let others hear you and respond. A place where you can tell strangers your fears and have safety behind your computer screen. This is lame

Comment(optional): Shame on you, shame, shame. It's sad that whenever someone tries to play Morality Police, the wrong people get targeted because of things they might have said or done in the past that are innocent (but get read into by fanatics), and the real threat slinks off into the shadows somewhere.
